In the fall of 2014, I did an internship with Strategy& for three months after finishing my bachelor degree in Econometrics. The internship program is great if you are looking to find out what strategy consulting is like, want to have fun but also want to develop yourself.
As an intern, you are a full member of the Amsterdam Strategy& community. As part of this, I got a peek at the range of development opportunities that Strategy& offers. For example, there was a training organized in the office for almost every week I was there. In addition, because you are working closely with many colleagues of different levels, I got to work on my non-academic skills - such as presenting and writing a storyline. I also experienced the extensive coaching program, which included a senior and junior mentor, along with a buddy to help me throughout the internship.
Strategy consulting is not only project work and trainings. I had a lot of fun because of the cool people and great atmosphere in the office. During lunch or social events my colleagues gave me many new perspectives on their personal and professional life. The topics varied from their projects (ranging from designing bio-waste-to-energy facilities to launching lower orbit satellites) to their holidays (desert off-roading in Oman to obtaining their pilot certification). At the end of the internship, I received feedback from a 360-degree assessment, for which a colleague interviewed all the people I worked with, to get an idea of my strengths and development areas. Based on the feedback I received a fulltime job offer, even before I started my master’s degree!
I aimed to do another internship outside of the Netherlands, after my time at Strategy& and the company actively helped me by introducing me to an investment fund in Nairobi, Kenya for which I ended up doing work for almost a year. The combination of working in a new culture with traveling made it some of the best times in my life so far. After my time in Kenya and finishing my master's degree, I joined Strategy& in March 2017 - and I do not regret it for a second. I would definitely recommend to do an internship after your bachelor's and Strategy& is a great place to do it!
